Your pets can develop problems with their teeth if they do not get due care. Teeth are important and the proper dental health is important for the overall health of the pets. Here are some common dental problems in pets and tips for their treatment.
Gum disease
Gum disease, also called periodontal disease is one of the most common dental problems found in pets. The main reason behind it is by the collection of plaque, food and tartar in the loose spaces between the gum and also the low part of tooth. This accumulation leads to inflammation and bacteria infection. If the gum disease is left untreated for a long time, the pet may lose those teeth because the infection spreads further to the sustaining the tissues.

Cats can develop lesions or wounds that may affect their several parts of the teeth. The tooth crown and roots are the common areas to be affected. The damage of the tooth goes on from the loss of enamel by the surface of the tooth and exposure of pulp there is loss of tissue and the surrounding gums get swollen and become bright red.
How to get healthy teeth for pets
- You should also have pet dental care routine at home. You should regularly brush your pet's teeth even since they are young. Also, the adult pets can be taught to put up with brushing. You can get the special designed toothbrush from the pet stores. Alternatively, you can also make use of the soft gauze. Do not share your own toothpaste or toothbrush with your pet. The toothpaste used by us can upset the stomach of your pet. The brushing method is the same with which you brush your teeth for your pet's teeth. Brush their teeth about two to three times per week.
- Have regular dental veterinary check ups and cleanings of your pet. If you own young and middle age pets, it is quite sufficient to have once in a year. For the old pets, you should practice check ups and cleanings twice in a year.
- Keep informed and discuss about the pet's dental care with your veterinarian.
- You should know the warning symptoms and signs of dental disease. They can be bad breath, change in habits of chewing or eating and even less activity or depression.
- Give your pet a dry and high quality pet food are a part of a healthy diet and is required for good dental health. The feeding should be proper and regular. Get them access to clean drinking water after feed.
- In between the dental visits, you should provide them with soft chewable toys made of rubber or nylon or fiber that can help them to wipe off their teeth clean.
