Dogs are the most chosen pets and therefore people are usually aware of the common diseases that affect horses but still the same reason contributes to the propagation of myths regarding these diseases.
Addison's disease or hypoadrenocorticism is a disease with symptoms that are most common to several other ailments. It is difficult to diagnose it, but if it is diagnosed and treated well the dog can lead a normal life again. Addison's disease has three main forms. They are primary, secondary and atypical. In case of primary and atypical Addison's disease is generally the result of resistant mediated injury to the glands. The secondary form of Hypoadrenocorticism is malfunctioning of the pituitary gland that stimulates the adrenals with adrenocorticotropic hormone or ACTH.
Visible symptoms of this disease are:
- Failure to eat or anorexia
- Vomiting
- Muscle weakness
- Hair loss
- Lethargy
- Painful tummy
- Bloody stools
The history and substantial examination and on time laboratory tests offer suspicion for Addison's disease. A more particular test is ACTH challenge must be executed to substantiate the disease and as quickly as possible.
Allergies and skin diseases are very common in dogs and you will have to be very alert about it and treat the dog quickly. Another disease that is very common among dogs is cataract. Cataract means breaking down or disruption of usual arrangement of lens fibers or capsule. It results in loss of transparency and consequent loss of vision. It can be genetic or acquired. White, bluish, gray or color alteration in the eye is the symptom of cataract. Surgery is the only way out in such cases.
Heart problems and lung failure are also major problems that dogs face. When a dog becomes sick, not only the heart gets affected but also blood vessels, kidneys and other critical organs. Therefore do not treat any of the diseases with ease. Be vigilant and aware of your dog’s behavioral pattern in order to detect illness quickly.
Convulsions in dogs are another deadly disease. Convulsions in dogs are a condition when neurons in cerebral cortex of brain fire with uncontrollable but synchronic fashion that does not happen during when the dog is normal. These can also be because of tumors.
Dogs can feel a seizure approaching and will thus usually show pre seizure signs, such as-
- Altered behavior, dog may appear confused or restless
- Extreme licking of lips
- Flipping of facial, skin muscles and body
- Decreased level of consciousness with the loss of consciousness
- Involuntary movement of the limbs
- Lying on his side
- Paddling or manufacturing running moves with limbs
- Shaking of whole body
- Too much salivation
- Unvoluntary urination
Regular visit to a vet whom your dog really trusts is a very important responsibility on your part and you should never disorient from it.
